A “fighting style” is ultimately dependent on the weapon wielded. As of 2023, there are four weapon classes in the Lightspeed Saber weapon canon, three of which are currently legal for use in competition.

Note: Linked products are generally recognized as falling within Lightspeed Saber competition regulations, however, some may require purchasing additional components, such as hilt extensions and/or minimal pommels or pommel caps in order to meet standards. For the various companies, you can usually purchase these additional parts directly from their websites.

REY CLASS

COMPETITION: Legal

Though this form is adopted by beginners, it is not to be underestimated, as it has the largest moveset of any class, and has a variety of sub-classes. Rey Class is marked by its versatility, which makes it well-suited for learning, as students can learn essentially any style they wish without purchasing multiple sabers.

Curved hilt sabers fall under Rey Class.

REN CLASS

COMPETITION: Legal

The Ren Saber is heavy and slow, but has the best defensive capabilities of any weapon in the Lightspeed canon. Unlike the other weapon classes, it has a minimum hilt size, committing it to a largely two-handed style, most closely compared to a long sword.

Forked sabers fall under Ren Class.

DYAD CLASS

COMPETITION: Legal

Dyad is the newest Lightspeed weapon class, consisting of one all-purpose saber and one parrying saber. Being so new, its rules and regulations are still in flux, but in general, the parrying saber is shorter, and may only be used for defense and other bladework. In the right hands, it is like a cross betwen Rey Saber and Ren Saber, having the defensive capability of Ren, but the versatility of Rey.

TANO CLASS

COMPETITION: Not legal (yet)

Tano Sabers are the shortest and fastest of all the weapons in the Lightspeed Saber canon, and can be paired up for dual-wielding, giving them formidable offense and defense IF they are in the right hands. Both weapons can be used for offense or defense.

DIMENSIONAL REGULATIONS

Weight requirement is the mass of the hilt, minus main blade, per grippable inch.

Okay, but what about Maul Class?

Maul Class is currently theoretical. While some starbats do use staff, it is not planned for competition and has no regulations associated with it.
